Career Development & Services
Welcome to the Office of Career Development and Services and congratulations on taking the next step toward your professional career.
The following not only outlines the policies and procedures that we expect that you to adhere to, but also serves as a professional contract of responsibility and understanding while working with our staff. As an office that assists in your growth towards professional success, we expect that you begin practicing your professional skills and strategies with us, before emerging into the “real world.” We look forward to working with you in this professional partnership.
• Come prepared and ready to work.
In order to make the most out of your visit, we ask that you come to your appointment having completed the tasks that have been requested of you. Also, after your appointments, you will be asked to complete certain tasks as follow up. Those tasks may include creating a target list, revising a resume, making a phone call, or writing a thank you note. Please come prepared to your subsequent sessions once those tasks have been completed.
•Practice being professional.
You are expected to make an effort to speak and write professionally with our office and other offices on campus. Address us by name, identify who you are, make your request politely, and provide us with your contact information. Please also be mindful of the voice mails and e-mail addresses you share with professional colleagues.
•Be on time.
If you arrive late, you may only receive the remaining time of the 45 minutes that was originally scheduled. If you are running late, please call our office and we will either change your appointment or adjust our appointment calendar if possible.
•When possible, make an appointment.
You may not receive enough time to meet your needs if you come to the office without an appointment. An appointment secures you a full 45 minute session which, in most cases, is to your benefit. If we are not available, please drop off any documents at the door and follow-up with a phone call or an e-mail to arrange an appointment.
•If you cannot make an appointment, notify us as soon as possible.
It is not fair or considerate to make other students wait for an appointment when earlier times could have been available. It is your responsibility to contact the Career Office to cancel and propose a re-scheduled time.
•Resume review can take a week or longer.
Early preparation results in a better resume and a higher chance for success. Please do not pressure us to review your resume the day before you apply for a position.
•Appointments are no longer than 45 minutes.
If you require additional time, you will be welcome to re-schedule a follow-up appointment at a later date. Please be mindful of the length of your appointment and take some initiative to bring the appointment to an end. Try utilizing statements such as, “I’m noticing our time is almost up.” “To summarize, I am going to ___ and you are going to ___ and I will contact you on ___ date.”
Correspondence.
While we do our best to respond to your emails immediately, please allow up to 24 hours for a response to any inquiry or correspondence sent.
Resumes / Cover Letters.
Resumes and cover letters will be reviewed in the order in which they are received. Turnaround time for a resume review and proposed revisions will be no later than 5 business days.
If you are scheduled for a resume review session, you must e-mail your resume ahead of time in order to allow the staff time to review your resume. You are also expected to follow-through with any contacts we establish for you.
Interview Preparation.
You must show up for your mock interview session as if you were attending your real interview. Please show up at least ten minutes early, dressed appropriately, and equipped with any items necessary for a real interview.
Co-op / Practicum Placement Assistance.
Searching for a site to complete a co-op or practicum is a partnership. You and the Career Services staff will work together in your site search. We will assist you with leads and outreach but you will be responsible for also identifying companies you wish you to target, as well as expected to make your own outreach to these companies and agencies.
The university will do everything it can to help you find the best opportunities, but it is up to you to ensure your success. That means preparing for interviews, performing well on the job, and drawing on your workplace and classroom learning to sharpen your professional and academic goals. Please note that schedule demands will vary based upon the employer need and the particular industry.
Career Services will make every reasonable effort to help you find a position, but Post University cannot guarantee that you will be placed. Working closely as a team with our staff and meeting all required deadlines will benefit you in your search process. Please come to the Career Development Office one semester prior to when you wish to complete a co-op or practicum.
A note on professional behavior while on site…
Making a great impression is critical. While completing your co-op practicum, you will be expected to follow the professional codes of conduct and dress that the site requires of all of their regular employees. Failure to follow these rules could result in removal from your position. Such behaviors include but are not limited to cell phone usage, text messaging, inappropriate internet usage and consistently showing up late.
Remember, you are not only acting an intern, but also an ambassador representing Post University.
