Biology

What is Biology?

Biology 1

Biology is the study of life-the study of the form and function of living organisms at the molecular, cellular, system, organismal, and ecological levels. This includes understanding how organisms develop, behave, interact, and evolve and how these processes relate to underlying genetic mechanisms. Applied biology uses this information to better understand the nature of diseases and develop improved therapies.

Health care is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy. A bachelor's degree in biology is sufficient for entry-level positions as a research assistant in biological field research, biomedicine, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Students with a bachelor's degree can also find jobs as high school science teachers where additional certification may be required in some states. Most students with a bachelor's degree in biology pursue additional education and training. Some enter medical, veterinary, dental, pharmacology, or other health profession schools. Others first obtain a master's degree, which is also sufficient for careers as research associates or college professors. Finally, some students pursue a Ph.D., which is necessary for independent research as well as for advancement to administrative positions.
