Associate in Science degree in Early Childhood Education

It is an exciting time for prospective teachers in the early childhood field. The Department of Early Childhood Education currently offers three programs to assist you in meeting your professional and career goals.

The Associate in Science degree in Early Childhood Education prepares students for careers in the field of early childhood education by providing an integrated curriculum of general education and professional studies for students interested in working with young children in an early childhood setting. The course work in this degree assists students in formulating a developmentally appropriate approach to the education of young children. The preparation of appropriate program plans, which involve positive self-esteem, the promotion of social skills, and the development of multicultural awareness, assist students in better understanding children with special needs. Students participate in three field experiences, which allow them to apply their knowledge of young children.

Students who anticipate that they may at a later date wish to seek teacher certification by completing a baccalaureate degree should follow the Transfer Track. Those more interested in preparing themselves for immediate employment in the field may wish to pursue the Career Track. 

The early childhood 21-credit certificate program provides students with the professional training comparable to fulfilling the educational requirements of the Child Development Associate Credential. Students in the program will receive training in the basic principles of early childhood for entry level teaching positions in early care and education centers, nursery schools, Head Start programs, hospital settings and community facilities.

In addition courses are offered on-line for those students wishing to pursue education through technology. Guest Speakers, hands on experiences, the use of the latest classroom technologies and materials prepare our students to meet the needs of diverse populations of young children in a multi-cultural society
