Assistant Director of Advising - OEI

Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of Advising plays a vital and critical role within the Advising operation. The Assistant Director helps to manage the operations of the advising office for the purposes of providing outstanding student support, improved retention rates, timely evaluation of transfer credits and work/life credits, and appropriate application of academic policies and standards. The primary responsibilities will be to assist, support and execute the directives of the Director of Advising specific to strategic and tactical business planning objectives. These objectives include hiring, training and developing the Advising staff to successfully achieve and exceed student retention goals. This position is responsible for developing and fostering a high degree of customer service satisfaction.

  • Responsible for day-to day operations of 10-15 employees in the Retention Services department.
  • Responsible for interviewing potential academic advisors
  • Responsible for coaching and motivating academic advisors.
  • Responsible for evaluating academic advisors to determine any training needs for both new and existing employees to consistently meet and exceed performance metrics
  • Responsible for performance reviews; discipline employees and elevate to next level if necessary

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years successful experience as an Academic Advisor in a higher education position preferred.
  • 1-3 years progressive management experience.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement assigned responsibilities and to work well under pressure to meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to keep consistent contact with 150-200 advisees
  • Good computer skills; able to use Microsoft Office products and learn university systems.
  • Problem solver; is a solutions-oriented person; Energetic and goal-oriented; strong interest in working in a fast paced environment that requires multi-tasking; Works well in a team environment; enjoys working as a contributing member of the Advising team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate and detailed records in a regulated industry; Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills, to enhance the university's outreach to students and staff.
