Teaching Philosophy:
Dr. Maybury’s teaching philosophy has its roots in a blend of Malcolm Knowles’ philosophy, a former professor of Richard’s, of adult learning integrated with neural restructuring research related to learning. Richard believes that teaching is about the learner, not the teacher. His responsibility as an educator is to create an environment that enables students to pursue their interests, in their own style and relevant to the world in which they live. The key is to help the students learn how to learn on their own through techniques such as: introducing them to new information, asking questions, challenging perspectives, teaching critical analysis techniques, introducing resources and original works for their own analysis, stimulating and promoting original thought, and ensuring the student’s dignity is respected.
Research over the past twenty years has yielded profound insights and approaches to restructuring one’s cognition through the remapping of neural networks related to learning. Though still in its very early stages, with the aid of technology, techniques for facilitating the neural restructuring in a learning mode resulting in developing new capabilities, insights, skills and ways of thinking employing cognitive elements not previously utilized by the student has been successful.
Dr. Maybury has been studying and employing these approaches for the past 15 years with significant success. Recently much has been written specifically related to using similar techniques in leadership development and organizational change. Dr. Maybury is currently working on papers to be published related to practical applications of these theories.
