Two Post University Equine Business Management students are beginning an educational adventure that will take them overseas later this month. Juniors Carly Puzacke of Torrington, CT and Veronica Liffland of Pawling, NY will study abroad for six months in England at The Huntley School of Equitation in Gloucestershire, one of the top training centers for the British Horse Society Assistant Instructor Certification.

They say all good things must come to an end, so the Post University Equine Resources Committee held its final meeting in October. This group of dedicated volunteers from the University and the local equestrian community has been active for more than 25 years planning, coordinating, and executing various equine events.

After spending five months in the U.K. taking part in an outstanding preparation program for the British Horse Society Assistant Instructor examinations, juniors Heather Whiles of Durham, CT and Kelsey Stinneford of Wayne, ME returned in June from Huntley School of Equitation in Gloucestershire, England.

Riding Instructors around the country are noting that one of their largest populations of new riders and new horse owners are adults aged 50+. These adults may have ridden as children or only wished to have ridden. Now that the kids are grown and moved away, they are taking some “me” time and climbing aboard Dobbin.

Stable Management II covers subjects from barn organization and pasture care, including fencing and drainage, to bedding and manure management, plus fly control. There will be advice on basic barn design for good ventilation, feeding and watering choices and storage, as well as discussions on environmental impacts of horse-keeping.

Antoinette graduated from Post University in 2009 with a B.S. in Equine Business Management and a B.A. in Psychology. Since then she has been working at HorseAbility, Center for Equine Facilitated Programs in Old Westbury, New York where she is Equine Director.

At the IHSA Regional Finals on March 11th at Mt. Holyoke College, Post University senior Brooke Fowler, student coach of the university’s new Western Team, placed second in her Open Horsemanship Class to qualify for the IHSA National Semi-Finals at the University of Findlay in Ohio, to be held on March 24-25.

The next in the current series of evening courses running through Post University’s Equine Department will start on Monday, May 9th at 6:30 PM. This course is the companion course to the popular Stable Management II course, and covers topics ranging from safe handling procedures and grooming, to tack fitting, bits and bitting, and boots and bandages.

At the first two shows of the Spring semester hosted on February 12 by Wesleyan University and February 20 by Sacred Heart University and Fairfield University, the Post University Equestrian Team earned five first place and seven second place ribbons.
