Forensic Accounting is the use of accounting and other business techniques to investigate and uncover fraud, gather evidence and present findings in a courtroom setting. The criminal site investigation involves the applicable books, financial records and documents examined. Frauds include theft of cash and merchandise, corruption, bribery, kickbacks, fraudulent financial statements, hidden assets, divorce, bankruptcy, money laundering, identity theft and false insurance claims.
Several state and federal government agencies and businesses hire individuals with this background. All large public accounting firms now have a "Forensic Accounting" department and many small firms have an individual working part time in this function. In addition to providing an educational base for entry level employment into the field, this program should help prepare students to take the Certified Fraud Examiner Examination and become a Certified Fraud Examiner.
