Florida Accounting Requirements

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS TO SIT FOR THE CPA EXAM IN FLORIDA: The general requirements to sit for the CPA examination in Florida include the following:

  1. A bachelors degree from an accredited institution. There is no requirement that the bachelors degree be in accounting.

  2. Thirty semester hours of coursework from an accredited institution, beyond what was required for the bachelors degree. If a bachelors degree required 120 semester hours, then the total hour requirement is 150 semester hours. There is no requirement that the thirty additional semester hours be taken at the masters level. In addition, there is no requirement, per se, for a masters degree.

  3. Within the total hour requirement in "2" above, 36 semester hours of accounting and/or tax courses above the principles level.

  4. Within the total hour requirement in "2" above, thirty-nine semester hours of general business courses, including six semester hours in business law.
