Teaching Background:

Attorney Bernard is currently an associate professor of legal studies in the Post University Legal Studies Department. She has taught Business Law and Introduction to Law since 2010. She is also a Judge Advocate (military lawyer) with the United States Army Reserve, in which capacity she regularly conducts military instruction in Pre-Deployment Legal Issues, Rules of Engagement, Ethics, Service Members Civil Relief Act, Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, among others. She is also an Instructor of Continuing Education for Professional Mortgage Loan Originators who must comply with mandatory professional requirements under Title V of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act (HERA), also known as the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (SAFE Act), requiring instruction in Federal Mortgage Laws, ethics, consumer protection and fair lending issues.

Professional Background:

Attorney Bernard specializes in the laws and regulations governing financial institutions such as mortgage lenders, brokers and other consumer finance companies; compliance advisor to financial institutions on consumer protection and fair lending laws; represent clients before State Administrative Agencies, investors and consumer entities. She has held positions such as General Counsel to several mortgage finance entities, and has served as Assistant Vice President and Director of Compliance and Quality Control.

Her role as advisor to corporate executives requires critical thinking, a skill she emphasizes in the classroom as she introduces students to the American Legal System.

Attorney Bernard has been member of the United States Army Reserves for 17 years. She is currently a Major in the Judge Advocate General Corps. (JAG) and has provided legal counsel to military commanders concerning requirements under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) including administrative, criminal, fiscal and international law, stateside, in support of United State Army’s Southern European Task Force in overseas duty tours, Germany and Italy, and while deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was previously an officer in the Transportation Corps and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal award for meritorious service in a combat zone.
