The University Writing Center
Post University is dedicated to developing and improving the written communication skills of all our students. The University Writing Center supports this dedication by working with students and staff to improve their writing and presentation skills.
The Center is adjacent to the University Learning Center located in North Room 116.
Post University requires writing across all phases of each student's curriculum. This means that students are expected to complete at least one writing assignment for each class they take. The Writing Center is an active participant in this curricular requirement. At the Center, students can work one-on-one with a writing tutor. Writing tutors help students learn to:
- Brainstorm and generate ideas for writing
- Understand the writing process and develop writing strategies that work
- Identify ways to improve writing and think clearly
- Revise, edit and proofread their own writing
- Understand and use grammar correctly
- Prepare a research paper
- Properly cite sources and avoid plagiarism
- Use styles and tones of writing appropriately
- Develop and deliver PowerPoint and other presentations
The Writing Center provides many writing resources for our students, including the following links. More will be forthcoming:

Students may sign up for a Writing Center appointment with Bonnie Odiorne, Ph.D. in person (North 116), by phone (203-596-4629), or via e-mail (writingcenter@post.edu). Day and evening appointments are available. In the event that Dr. Odiorne is not available for day division appointments, Learning Center peer tutors can assist with some writing issues.
Writing tutors work with drop-ins if others are not already scheduled. To guarantee time, please make an appointment. If you can’t make it to your appointment, please call or e-mail the Center as soon as possible so that we can use that time with other students.
Set goals for the session. Take some time before the appointment to list general writing questions or concerns, and what you would like to accomplish. Come prepared with the name of the course and Professor, and the exact wording of the assignment.
Do not wait until the last minute. If you bring an assignment to the Center the day before it is due, you probably won’t have time to do the necessary work. It is most beneficial to go through the entire writing process: brainstorming, organizing, getting additional information, writing the first draft, revising for content, and proofreading/editing.
Writing tutors do not rewrite, edit, or proofread or otherwise "fix" student writing. This is so that each student may develop his/her individual writing style.
Unless students ask that the session be confidential, we send student reports to instructors to let them know that the student is working to improve writing skills. Instructors may also request or require that students visit the Writing Center to address specific writing issues, and internalize his/her learning by finding the resources that will help a student correct or improve her/his writing.
E-mail consultations are available. Contact writingcenter@post.edu for details.
Online and Branch Site Students
Online and branch-site students can receive all of the services listed above through e-mail consultations. E-mail tutoring provides an opportunity for our distance students to improve their writing skills with experienced professional staff. The writing center does not provide editing or proofreading, but overall content-level comments, and specific sentence-level comments within the text of the paper. We also provide links to websites that allow students to acquire the writing skills they need. Students must send an attachment of their drafts in MS Word, and include in the body of the e-mail the course, professor, and assignment.

What students have said about us
From an online student: After reading what you said and inserted, my eyes have opened. I now realize that studying and reading are the best ways for me to be an active writer. You have helped me greatly. I will continue to send my essays to you for review. … Thank you once again. You are a great help in my writing efforts…to different ways of putting things when you respond.
